ABOUT US

Ke Kumu Kukui is a cultural grove/shelter for youth. Our ʻōpiopio (youth) will engage in experiential learning/therapy consisting of a variety of activities designed to expand interest in and foster personal growth and healing.  These are developed through participation in culturally rooted activities including working in lo’i kalo, mele, ho’opono, ike kupuna, hoe wa’a: taro patch, songs, truth-telling, ancestral knowledge, canoe paddling, along with wood working and ike aina: hiking/camping and learning from land.

They will also be provided with education that will allow them to either gain their GED or return to school at their age-appropriate grade level after completing treatment.  Our ʻōpiopio will be provided with education regarding substance use and abuse while expanding the skills needed for effective living, and implemented with a Cognitive Intervention curriculum.

A cultural-base component is designed to effectively include cultural values and practices to instill awareness of well-being and facilitate individual recognition of personal mastery.  Hawaiian cultural concepts of kuleana (responsibility) and pono (doing things rightly) will be integrated throughout the treatment process as a guide for our ʻōpiopio about their personal behavior and how it relates to their family, community, and natural environment.

Counseling services will provide understanding of generational and cultural trauma linked to behavioral issues. Services will also address underlying cognitions and feelings that may have led our ʻōpiopio to escape rather than cope with issues.

Intensive family involvement inspired by traditional Hawaiian concepts of open communication and building trust provides a common goal to work through issues.  Family involvement includes bi-weekly family kukakuka sessions, monthly family enrichment days where family members join our ʻōpiopio and staff at program site to share in the experiences of the program, and therapeutic home visits by staff shortly after ʻōpiopio discharges from the program.
